Silver Price Breaks $40, Decade High

On July 24, 2026, international spot silver prices surged past the $40/oz mark, hitting a high of $40.85/oz and closing at $40.62/oz, up 3.7%, the highest since 2012. Silver has risen over 35% year-to-date, far outperforming gold (up ~12%), making it the standout in precious metals.

Industrial Demand Drives Rally

Unlike gold, driven by central bank reserves and safe-haven demand, silver has significant industrial use. According to the World Silver Institute's 2026 Silver Supply and Demand Report, global industrial silver demand is expected to reach 680 million ounces in 2026, up 12% year-on-year, accounting for over 55% of total demand. Solar photovoltaic demand grew fastest, up 28% to 210 million ounces; electric vehicles and 5G communications demand also rose 18% and 15% respectively.

"Silver's conductivity in photovoltaic panels is irreplaceable. Each module requires about 20 grams of silver. With global PV installations exceeding 350 GW in 2026, silver demand is exploding," said Chen Weihao, analyst at Singapore precious metals research institution Silver Insights. Additionally, battery connectors, sensors, and charging stations in EVs use large amounts of silver. By 2030, EV-related silver demand is expected to account for 20% of industrial demand.

Supply Side Remains Tight

On the supply side, multiple constraints exist. Mine output in Mexico, the world's largest producer, has declined due to water shortages and policy restrictions. Ore grades in Peru and China continue to fall. The World Silver Institute estimates global silver supply in 2026 will grow only 1.2% to 1.02 billion ounces, with the supply-demand gap widening to 120 million ounces, the largest since 2015.

"Mine expansion cycles typically take 5-7 years, so supply bottlenecks are hard to break short-term," noted Katherine Lee, precious metals analyst at BDO mining consultancy in Australia. She added that most silver mines are by-products of base metals like copper, lead, and zinc, making standalone silver projects uneconomical, further limiting new capacity.

Gold-Silver Ratio Narrows Fast

As silver prices rise sharply, the gold-silver ratio has narrowed from 82:1 at the start of the year to 62:1, but remains below the historical average of 55:1. Some analysts believe if industrial demand exceeds expectations, the ratio could fall to 40:1, implying significant upside for silver.

"Silver inventories are also being drawn down quickly." London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) data shows London silver stocks fell to 28,000 tonnes in July, the lowest since 2020. Net long positions in silver futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (COMEX) rose to historical highs, indicating strong bullish sentiment.

Investment Channels and Risk Warnings

Investors can access silver through physical (bars, coins), ETFs (e.g., SLV, SIVR), futures, and mining stocks. However, analysts warn that silver price volatility is much higher than gold, with historical single-day drops of 20%. Current prices are in overbought territory, raising short-term correction risks.

"Long-term fundamentals support silver, but chasing highs short-term requires caution," advised Gregor Gregersen, founder of Singapore precious metals dealer Silver Bullion. He suggests investors allocate 5%-10% of portfolios to silver and use dollar-cost averaging to diversify risk. He added that a global recession could cause industrial demand to plummet, leading to a cliff-like drop in silver prices.

Outlook: Green Transition Supports Long-Term Bull Market

Looking to the second half, several investment banks have raised their silver price forecasts. Goldman Sachs raised its year-end 2026 target from $38 to $45, while Morgan Stanley sees silver breaking $50 in 2027. Against the backdrop of global net-zero transition, silver's role as a "green metal" will be further consolidated.

Asia-Pacific, especially China and India, is accelerating PV and EV industries. China's National Energy Administration reported on July 20 that new PV installations in China reached 105 GW in the first half of 2026, up 42% year-on-year. India also plans to achieve 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. These policies will continue to boost industrial silver demand.

Meanwhile, physical silver investment demand in India and China is also heating up. India's silver imports in H1 2026 surged 60% year-on-year to 4,200 tonnes, expected to hit a record high for the full year. China's silver ETF assets grew 80%, with strong retail demand for silver bars.

In summary, silver is at the start of a new long-term bull market. However, investors must recognize that industrial demand-driven cycles are more cyclical and volatile. Asia-Pacific Mining Finance will continue to track precious metals markets and provide professional analysis and references.
